Britain decides what's cool. Our job is to listen properly.
Not a boardroom. Not a buyer's list. The brands this country actually loves, argues about, queues for and defends, judged by people with the perspective to know the difference.
If cool starts in the margins and ends up in the mainstream, we track the journey.
Brands cannot enter. Brands cannot influence. Brands can only be chosen.
Which is exactly why it means something when you are. This is the one part of the programme that has never moved and never will.
What makes a CoolBrand.
The CoolBrands seal is a verified benchmark of the brands defining modern Britain. The hard work of building authentic culture belongs to the brands. Our role is to independently measure the brands actively setting trends and shifting expectations. Every award is independently verified across three core pillars:
Impact
Thousands of brands are making a positive difference to society and the environment, but which are proving it successfully? This metric celebrates true substance, highlighting the brands that back up their promises with real-world investment in sustainability and community.
Relevance
A brand can capture your attention for a moment, but which ones are earning a place in your day-to-day life? This metric celebrates authentic connection, highlighting the brands that move past superficial noise to deliver genuine utility, spark real conversation and become an indispensable part of modern culture.
Resonance
Great brands have incredible histories, but which ones are successfully shaping culture now? This metric celebrates continuous evolution, highlighting the established icons and rising stars that are actively innovating, growing and driving the cultural conversation.
CoolBrands Status is not a product review or a single accolade. It is a measure of a brand's total cultural weight.
We do not look at isolated success. We evaluate how a brand shifts the world around it: through its broader impact on sustainability and community, its absolute relevance to modern life and its cultural resonance.
How it's decided
Two independent bodies work in sequence: the Council conducts the assessment and scoring of all brands; the Panel ratifies the selection, identifying the annual unranked Top Tier and Category Benchmarks.
Ten independent voices.
Cultural relevance isn't about chasing what's loudest. It's about why something actually matters to people.
Paul Armstrong · Panel
The Panel, in depth.
The Panel operates entirely independent of CoolBrands, brought together by shared standards rather than commercial ties. Each member brings frontline authority from the cultural spaces they shape.
The Chair is Professor Jonathan AJ Wilson, Professor of Brand Strategy and Culture at Regent's University London. His role is to run the panel and hold every brand to the exact same rigorous benchmark, whether it's a global household name or a subculture breakout brand defended by its community.

The list has never stood still.
Cultural relevance is dynamic, not static. Our annual benchmark evaluates real-time impact and present-day resonance, ensuring Status reflects who is shaping culture today.
A council of tastemakers, scoring by instinct and expertise. The judgement was the method.
Expert judgement, structured and independently run, with an independently chaired Panel holding the final word.
The 2027 Expert Council is being recruited for next year's Status process.
No brand can apply, nominate itself or pay to enter. That has never changed and never will.
Seventeen volumes and counting.
The 2026 list is not published yet. Until it is, the last volume is online in full: the brands, the writing and the arguments, exactly as they went to print.
Independently selected.
Commercially powerful.
No brand can apply, nominate itself or pay for inclusion. Selection is independent.
Once awarded Status, brands gain the right to license the official CoolBrands seal across their packaging, advertising, digital channels and retail environments.
The licence buys the right to display verified cultural weight. It has never bought the right to receive it and it never will. That distinction is what gives the seal its unique value.
